Peter O'Toole

Peter O'Toole

With his steely blue eyes and mercurial gait Peter O'Toole defined British cinema and a generation's expectations of what was possible in the medium with his performance as T. E. Lawrence in David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia. Renowned for living life to the full in the heady 1960s and 70s (he once went out for a drink in Paris and woke up in Corsica), O'Toole left an indelible mark on the cinematic and theatrical world on account of a talent that won him eight Oscar nominations and, finally, a gong for lifetime achievement; what's more, his vim and magnetic personality characterised an icon whose death leaves the globe a greyer place.
